Benjamin Schmolck (English adaptation)
Translator
Benjamin Schmolck (1672-1737) was a German Lutheran pastor and prolific hymn writer of the Baroque period. He composed over 900 hymns and sacred songs, many of which became central to German Protestant worship and were widely translated into English during the 18th and 19th centuries. Schmolck's works were characterized by deep theological reflection and emotional warmth, reflecting the Pietist movement's influence on Lutheran hymnody. His hymns, such as 'Open Now Thy Gates of Beauty,' remain in use in Protestant churches today. As a translator, he also adapted older hymn texts for contemporary congregational use, significantly shaping the development of modern German church music.
