Charles Winkworth
1869– · England · Romantic
Charles Winkworth (1869–after 1890) was an English hymn translator and music scholar who contributed significantly to the preservation and dissemination of German Protestant hymns in English-speaking churches. Working in the tradition of his more famous sister Catherine Winkworth, he translated numerous German chorale texts into English, making the rich heritage of Lutheran and Reformed hymnody accessible to British congregations. His translations maintained both theological accuracy and singability, characteristics essential to effective hymn translation. Winkworth's work helped establish German hymns as an important part of the English hymnal repertoire during the Victorian era, contributing to the broader revival of interest in historical church music.
