Christina Rossetti
1830–1894 · England · Romantic
Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) was an English poet of the Pre-Raphaelite movement whose devotional verse made significant contributions to Victorian Christian hymnody. Her deeply religious sensibility produced numerous hymns and spiritual poems that were widely adopted in Anglican and other Protestant worship services. Best known for her hymn "In the Bleak Midwinter," which has become a Christmas classic, Rossetti explored themes of faith, sacrifice, redemption, and mystical spirituality with lyrical grace. Her works reflected Anglo-Catholic piety and the Victorian revival of interest in medieval religious aesthetics. Through her prolific output of devotional poetry, Rossetti left an enduring legacy in church music, with her hymns remaining prominent in modern hymnals and continuing to inspire both liturgical and popular religious expression.
