Daniel Roberts

1841–1907 · USA · Romantic

Daniel Roberts (1841-1907) was an American Baptist clergyman and hymn writer from Brandon, Vermont, whose compositions achieved remarkable ecumenical reach across Protestant denominations despite his Baptist heritage. A prolific hymnodist of the late 19th century, Roberts contributed numerous hymns to various hymnals and religious publications, many of which reflected themes of faith, redemption, and Christian devotion. His ability to craft accessible, theologically sound verse made his hymns suitable for adoption in Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational, and other Protestant traditions. Roberts exemplified the 19th-century American hymn-writing tradition, where denominational boundaries were often transcended by the quality and universal appeal of sacred music. His legacy endures through hymns that continue to appear in modern hymnals and collections of American sacred song.
