Edward Perronet
1726–1792 · England · Baroque
Edward Perronet (1726-1792) was an English Independent (Congregational) minister and prolific hymn writer, son of Vincent Perronet, a prominent Methodist associate and clergyman. Though raised in Methodist circles and influenced by John Wesley, Perronet ultimately became an Independent minister, reflecting the religious diversity of 18th-century Protestantism. He is best known for his hymn "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name" (1779), one of the most celebrated and widely translated hymns in Christian worship, which exemplifies his theologically robust and singable style. His hymns were embraced across denominational boundaries, including adoption by Lutheran and Reformed churches despite his Congregational background. Perronet's contribution to hymnody represents the rich cross-pollination of Methodist, Independent, and broader evangelical traditions during the English religious revival.
