Eleanor Farjeon
1881–1965 · England · Romantic
Eleanor Farjeon (1881–1965) was a prolific English author, poet, and hymnwriter who made significant contributions to children's literature and religious verse. Though primarily known for her acclaimed children's books and fairy tales, she composed notable hymn texts that reflected her Anglican faith and poetic sensibility. Her hymn "God's very great and God's very small," among others, demonstrated her ability to craft accessible, theologically sound devotional poetry. Farjeon's hymnic work, while modest in quantity compared to her vast literary output, exemplified the early-to-mid twentieth-century tradition of literary figures contributing to Christian worship. She remains remembered as a versatile artist whose religious verse enriched the hymnological tradition of the Church of England.
