Ernst Pepping
Ernst Pepping (1901–1981) was a significant German composer and organist who made substantial contributions to Protestant church music in the 20th century. He served as director of the Spandauer Kantorei in Berlin and later as a professor at the Berlin Church Music School, where he profoundly influenced generations of church musicians. Pepping composed numerous sacred works including motets, cantatas, and organ pieces that drew inspiration from both Lutheran traditions and contemporary compositional techniques. His output was particularly notable for revitalizing German Protestant church music during and after the Nazi era, and his works for choir and organ remain central to the modern Lutheran liturgical repertoire. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in 20th-century German sacred music composition.
