Frederick Henry Hedge (1805-1890) was an American Unitarian minister and scholar who made significant contributions to Christian hymnody through his translations and editorial work. He is best known for translating German Protestant hymns into English, particularly Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," which became one of the most widely used hymns in English-speaking churches. Hedge served as a pastor and professor at Harvard Divinity School, where he promoted the integration of German theological scholarship into American religious thought. His hymn translations helped bridge European and American Protestant traditions and remain staples of many modern hymnals. Hedge's work was instrumental in popularizing high-quality hymn translations that maintained both theological accuracy and poetic beauty.
