Frederick Hedge
1853– · USA · Romantic
Frederick Henry Hedge (1805-1890) was an American Unitarian minister and prolific hymn translator who played a crucial role in introducing German Protestant hymns to English-speaking congregations. Though born in 1805 (not 1853 as indicated), Hedge is best known for his translations of Lutheran and Reformed hymns, most famously "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," which he adapted from the Latin "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel." His scholarly approach to hymnody preserved both theological depth and poetic beauty, making complex German religious verse accessible to American audiences. Hedge's translations significantly enriched American Protestant hymnody and remain standard in many denominational hymnals to this day, demonstrating the enduring influence of his work on Christian worship.
