Gerard Moultrie
1864–1885 · England · Romantic
Gerard Moultrie (1829-1885) was an English Anglican clergyman and accomplished hymn translator who made significant contributions to Victorian hymnody. He is best known for his translations of Latin and Greek hymns into English, bringing ancient ecclesiastical texts into the worship of the nineteenth-century Church of England. Moultrie's translations, characterized by their literary quality and liturgical sensitivity, appeared in various hymnals including "Hymns and Lyrics for the Amusement and Instruction of Little Children" and other collections. His work bridged the Oxford Movement's interest in patristic sources with contemporary congregational worship, making classical Christian hymnic traditions accessible to English-speaking Anglicans. Though less celebrated than some contemporaries, Moultrie's scholarly approach to hymn translation influenced the development of Church of England hymnody during the Victorian era.
