Johann Gottfried Walther
Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748) was a German composer, organist, and music theorist who made significant contributions to Lutheran church music and organ repertoire during the Baroque period. He served as court organist in Weimar and was a respected colleague of Johann Sebastian Bach, with whom he shared musical ideas and compositions. Walther composed numerous chorale preludes, fugues, and other organ works that became standard in the Lutheran liturgical tradition, demonstrating mastery of counterpoint and harmonic innovation. He is also renowned for his Musicalisches Lexicon (1732), one of the earliest comprehensive music dictionaries, which documented the musical knowledge and terminology of his era. His compositions and theoretical writings were influential in establishing the organ chorale prelude as a central form in German Protestant church music.
