Johann Pachelbel
Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706) was a German Baroque composer and organist who made significant contributions to both instrumental and sacred vocal music. He served as organist in major German cities including Vienna, Erfurt, and Stuttgart, and was highly influential in developing the German organ repertoire and chorale-based compositions. Pachelbel is best known today for his Canon in D, but he also composed numerous sacred works, motets, and organ pieces based on Protestant chorales that became foundational to German church music tradition. His approach to chorale variation and counterpoint influenced subsequent generations of composers, including members of the Bach family. His legacy in hymnody reflects the rich tradition of German Protestant church music during the late Baroque period.
