John Gambold

1748– · England · Baroque

John Gambold (1748-after 1818) was an English clergyman and translator associated with the Moravian Church. He is best known for his translations of German hymns into English, particularly those from the Moravian hymnal tradition. Gambold served as a Moravian minister and contributed significantly to making Continental Protestant hymnody accessible to English-speaking congregations. His translation work helped bridge the gap between German pietistic and English Methodist hymn traditions during the late 18th century.
