John Mason Neale (1818-1877) was an English Anglican clergyman and one of the most prolific hymn translators of the 19th century. He is best known for translating medieval Latin hymns into English, making them accessible to modern congregations and significantly enriching the Anglican hymnal tradition. His translations include famous works such as 'O Come, O Come Emmanuel' and 'All Glory, Laud, and Honor,' which remain staples of Christian worship today. Neale was deeply committed to the Oxford Movement and Victorian church restoration, and his scholarly work helped revive interest in patristic and medieval ecclesiastical traditions. His contributions to hymnody established him as a foundational figure in the development of modern English church music.
