Karl Straube
Karl Straube (1873-1950) was a prominent German organist, conductor, and church musician who profoundly influenced Lutheran church music in the 20th century. As cantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig from 1903 until his death, he continued the prestigious tradition established by J.S. Bach and became a leading figure in the church music reform movement. Straube was instrumental in reviving interest in baroque and Renaissance sacred music while also championing contemporary compositions, commissioning new works from major composers. His scholarly editions of historical church music and his innovative liturgical performances established new standards for Protestant church music practice. His legacy as both a performer and advocate for quality church music made him one of the most influential musicians of his era in the German Protestant tradition.
