Katharina Winkworth (1827-1878) was an English hymnographer and translator who played a crucial role in introducing German Protestant hymns to the English-speaking world. She is best known for her two major collections: 'Lyra Germanica' (1855) and its sequel (1858), which translated works by Martin Luther, Paul Gerhardt, and other German hymn writers with remarkable sensitivity and literary skill. Her translations, such as 'Now Thank We All Our God' and 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,' became standard in English hymnals and remain widely sung in churches today. Winkworth's work bridged German and English ecclesiastical traditions during the Victorian era, significantly enriching Protestant worship through her scholarly yet accessible rendering of continental hymnody.
