Martin Rinkart
1586–1649 · Germany · Reformation
Martin Rinkart (1586-1649) was a German Lutheran pastor and hymnodist who served as a minister in Eilenburg during the catastrophic Thirty Years' War. Despite witnessing devastating plague outbreaks and the horrors of war, he composed numerous hymns that expressed faith, gratitude, and resilience in the face of suffering. His most famous work is the hymn "Nun danket alle Gott" (Now Thank We All Our God), written around 1636, which became one of the most beloved Lutheran hymns and continues to be sung in churches worldwide. This hymn exemplifies the German chorale tradition and reflects Rinkart's ability to find profound spiritual meaning amid earthly tribulation. His contributions to Lutheran hymnody secured his place as one of the most significant religious poets of the Baroque era.
