Max Reger

Max Reger (1873-1916) was a German composer and organist who made significant contributions to Protestant church music and organ literature. Though primarily known for his instrumental works, Reger composed numerous chorale preludes and organ pieces that became central to the German Lutheran musical tradition. His harmonically advanced yet deeply rooted approach to chorale settings influenced 20th-century church composers. Reger served as a church organist and professor, championing the organ as a serious concert instrument while maintaining respect for Bach's legacy. His works remain fundamental to both the concert organ and church music repertoires.
