Paul Speratus (1484-1551) was a German Lutheran reformer and hymnodist who played a significant role in the development of Protestant church music during the Reformation. After studying in Rome and coming under the influence of Martin Luther's theological teachings, Speratus became a pastor in Prussia where he devoted himself to advancing the Reformation movement. He is best known for composing hymns that supported Lutheran theology and liturgical practice, contributing to the emerging Protestant hymnody tradition. His works helped establish the vernacular hymn as a central element of Lutheran worship, making theological content accessible to common believers. Speratus's contributions were instrumental in shaping the character of German Protestant sacred music during the critical early decades of the Reformation.
