Philip Schaff and others

Translator

Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was a Swiss-born American biblical scholar and church historian who became a leading figure in 19th-century Protestant ecclesiastical scholarship. As a translator and editor, Schaff was instrumental in producing the Revised Version of the English Bible and contributed to numerous hymnal projects and liturgical publications. He collaborated with other scholars to translate and adapt Christian hymns and liturgical texts, making patristic and medieval hymn traditions accessible to English-speaking Protestant congregations. Schaff's work bridged Germanic and Anglo-American religious scholarship, significantly influencing how American churches understood and used hymnody drawn from broader Christian traditions.
