Phillip Schaff (1819-1893) and Henry E. Jacobs (1844-1932) were prominent Lutheran scholars and hymnologists who collaborated on significant translations and compilations of Christian hymns. Schaff, a Swiss-born theologian who emigrated to America, was a leading ecclesiastical historian, while Jacobs was an American Lutheran pastor and editor. Together they worked to preserve and translate Lutheran hymnic traditions, making them accessible to English-speaking congregations. Their collaborative efforts contributed substantially to the documentation and dissemination of Reformed and Lutheran hymnody in the late 19th century. Their work helped establish a scholarly foundation for understanding the theological and historical significance of Christian hymn traditions in American religious life.
