Phillip Schaff and Henry Jacobs
1875– · USA · Romantic
Phillip Schaff (1819-1893) and Henry Jacobs (1844-1932) were prominent Lutheran scholars and hymnologists who collaborated on significant translations of Christian hymns. Schaff, a Swiss-born theologian who emigrated to America, was a prolific church historian and editor, while Jacobs was an American Lutheran minister and hymn translator. Together they translated numerous German hymns into English, contributing substantially to the enrichment of English-language Lutheran hymnody during the 19th century. Their collaborative work helped preserve and disseminate important Reformation-era hymns and contemporary German religious poetry for American Protestant congregations. Their translations remain influential in Lutheran worship traditions.
