Ray Palmer (1808-1887) was an American Congregationalist minister, editor, and prolific hymn writer who made significant contributions to 19th-century Christian hymnody. Educated at Yale University, he served in various Congregational churches and became known for his ability to craft hymn texts that combined theological depth with accessible language and memorable melodies. Palmer authored or translated over 1,400 hymns during his lifetime, including the beloved 'My Faith Looks Up to Thee,' which became one of the most widely recognized American hymns. His editorial work on hymnal collections helped shape the devotional practices of American Protestant churches throughout the Victorian era. Palmer's legacy endures through his numerous hymns that remain in use in contemporary hymnals and worship services.
