Sigfrid Karg-Elert

Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877–1933) was a German composer and organist who made significant contributions to Protestant church music and organ literature in the early 20th century. He served as a professor of composition at the Leipzig Conservatory and was particularly known for his prolific output of organ works, chorale arrangements, and sacred compositions. Karg-Elert synthesized Romantic harmonic language with Lutheran chorale traditions, creating music that bridged late Romanticism and early modernism. His works for organ, including numerous chorale preludes and fantasias, remain central to the Protestant organ repertoire and reflect the German chorale-based compositional tradition. He is remembered as an important figure in preserving and reimagining the chorale tradition for contemporary liturgical use.
