Joseph Augustus Seiss (1823-1904) was a prominent Lutheran pastor, hymn translator, and prolific author who served congregations in Maryland and Pennsylvania throughout his ministry. He was instrumental in translating numerous German hymns into English, making the rich treasury of Lutheran hymnody accessible to American Protestant congregations. Seiss authored original hymns and devotional works while also serving as a bridge between German and American church traditions. His translations preserved the theological depth and poetic quality of classic German chorales, significantly enriching American Lutheran and broader Protestant hymnody. His contributions remain influential in contemporary Lutheran worship and hymnals.
