The Lutheran Hymnal committee
1941– · USA · Modern
The Lutheran Hymnal Committee was an editorial body established by the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS) to produce The Lutheran Hymnal, published in 1941. The committee's primary contribution to Christian hymnody was the translation and compilation of hymn texts, bringing both traditional Lutheran chorales and contemporary compositions into English for American congregations. The Lutheran Hymnal became one of the most widely used hymnals in Lutheran worship during the mid-twentieth century, serving as the standard hymnal for LCMS congregations for several decades. Through their translation work, the committee preserved important German and Scandinavian hymnic traditions while making them accessible to English-speaking worshippers, significantly influencing Lutheran liturgical practice in North America.
