An Advent hymn based on Isaiah 40:1-5, the great passage of comfort that opens the second half of Isaiah and was read as a prophecy of John the Baptist's ministry. The hymn moves from God's word of comfort to the herald's call to prepare the way.

Written by Johann Olearius (1611-1684) as Tröstet Tröstet meine Lieben in 1671. Translated by Catherine Winkworth in 1863. Based on Isaiah 40:1-5, the great Advent text of comfort and preparation.
