O radiant Light, O Sun divine of God the Father's deathless face
The ancient evening hymn of the Eastern church, sung as lamps are lit at Vespers. The hymn greets the setting sun and the lighting of lamps as an occasion to praise Christ as the true Light. One of the oldest surviving Christian hymns.
History & Background
One of the oldest Christian hymns outside the New Testament, possibly 3rd or 4th century. The Greek Phos Hilaron (Joyful Light) is the evening hymn of the Eastern church. Translated into English by William G. Storey.
