1798–1864 · Germany · Classical
Albert Knapp (1798-1864) was a German Reformed pastor, poet, and hymnodist who served churches in Württemberg throughout his ministry. He is best known for compiling the Evangelischer Liederschatz (Evangelical Treasure of Songs), an extensive hymn collection that included both original compositions and translations of hymns from various traditions. Knapp's work was instrumental in enriching German Protestant hymnody during the nineteenth century, preserving and promoting the Reformed theological perspective through sacred verse. His contributions to congregational singing and hymnal compilation made him a significant figure in the development of modern German church music. The Liederschatz remains an important historical resource for understanding the hymnic traditions of the German Reformed Church.
