Bernard of Clairvaux

Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) was a Cistercian monk, mystic theologian, and Doctor of the Church whose devotional writings profoundly influenced medieval spirituality and Passion mysticism. He composed numerous Latin hymns and spiritual texts that emphasized affective piety and intimate devotion to Christ, including works that inspired later liturgical music traditions. His mystical theology and eloquent Latin prose shaped the devotional language of Cistercian monastic communities throughout Europe. Bernard's influence extended beyond his lifetime, as his writings were widely copied and his hymnic theology became foundational to medieval and Renaissance spiritual music.
