Bernard of Cluny was a 12th-century Benedictine monk and Latin poet whose works significantly influenced medieval Christian spirituality and hymnody. He is best remembered for his extensive moral poetry, particularly the lengthy work 'De contemptu mundi' (On the Contempt of the World), which emphasized spiritual discipline and the transience of earthly existence. His Latin verses were widely circulated in monastic communities and contributed to the development of liturgical poetry during the High Middle Ages. Several of his poetic works were adapted into hymn texts used in the Divine Office, reflecting themes of penitence, divine judgment, and heavenly longing. Bernard's theological poetry exemplified the Cluniac reform movement's emphasis on contemplative monasticism and moral instruction through sacred verse.
