Berthold Nicolai

Berthold Nicolai (1554-1627) was a German Lutheran pastor and hymn writer who contributed significantly to Protestant hymnody during the Reformation era. Active in various pastoral positions throughout Germany, Nicolai composed and compiled hymns that reflected Lutheran theology and devotional practices of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. His works were part of the broader movement to develop vernacular hymn singing in the German Protestant church, following the example of Martin Luther.
