Christian Gellert

Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (1715-1769) was a German poet, theologian, and professor of rhetoric and poetry at the University of Leipzig who made significant contributions to Lutheran hymnody. He is best known for his religious poetry and moral fables, which reflected Enlightenment values while maintaining theological depth. Gellert composed numerous hymn texts that were widely adopted in German Protestant churches, combining accessibility with doctrinal substance. His works were characterized by clear, elegant language and emotional sincerity, making complex religious ideas comprehensible to ordinary congregants. Gellert's influence on German hymnody extended well beyond his lifetime, and many of his hymns remain in use in Protestant hymnals today.
