Christian Karl von Winterfeldt

Christian Karl von Winterfeldt (1713-1769) was a Prussian diplomat and court official under Frederick the Great who made significant contributions to German Protestant hymnody and theological scholarship. Despite his primary duties in diplomatic service, he devoted considerable energy to hymn writing and religious studies, authoring numerous German hymns and theological works. Winterfeldt was instrumental in preserving and promoting Lutheran hymnological traditions during the 18th century, a period of religious and intellectual transition in Prussia. His hymnic compositions reflected orthodox Lutheran theology while engaging with the contemporary currents of German Pietism and Enlightenment thought. Though less widely remembered than some contemporaries, his work represented an important effort to maintain hymnological standards and theological depth in German Protestant worship during his era.
