Coelius Sedulius
Coelius Sedulius was a 5th-century Christian Latin poet who made foundational contributions to medieval liturgical hymnody. He is best known for his acrostic hymns, particularly the 'Acrostic Hymn on Christ' (Carmen Paschale), which employed alphabetic acrostics to aid memorization and theological instruction. His works were widely adopted throughout the Western Church and became standard texts in medieval liturgical practice. Sedulius's sophisticated Latin poetry and theological content established models for subsequent generations of hymn writers. His influence extended throughout the medieval period, making him one of the most significant early Christian hymnodists of the Latin tradition.
