David Livingstone (1813-1873) was a Scottish missionary and explorer whose spiritual writings and correspondence influenced Christian hymnody, though he was primarily known for his missionary work in Africa. Jessie Seymour Irvine (1836-1887), a talented Scottish church musician and composer from Aberdeenshire, paraphrased and set Livingstone's texts to music for the Scottish Psalter tradition. Irvine's most celebrated composition, the tune CRIMOND, became one of the most enduring melodies in Presbyterian worship and remains widely sung today.
