Erasmus Speratus

Erasmus Speratus (1500-1551) was a German Lutheran theologian and reformer who became a prominent associate of Martin Luther during the Protestant Reformation. He served as superintendent of the Prussian churches and made significant contributions to Lutheran hymnody through his composition and translation of hymns. Speratus authored several important hymns including "Es ist das Heil uns kommen her" (Salvation unto us has come), which became a cornerstone of Lutheran worship and theology. His hymn texts reflect the doctrinal emphases of the Reformation, particularly justification by faith, and were widely adopted in Lutheran congregations. His work helped establish the tradition of congregational singing in German-language Protestant churches.
