Erik Routley

Erik Routley (1917-1982) was an English Congregational minister, hymnologist, and theologian who became one of the most influential figures in twentieth-century Christian hymnody. He served as professor of church music at Princeton Theological Seminary and later at Westminster Choir College, where he championed the reform and renewal of congregational singing. Routley authored numerous hymn texts and was a prolific writer on hymn history and theology, including the comprehensive work 'Hymns and Human Life.' His scholarly approach to hymnology combined deep theological conviction with accessible pastoral sensibility, making him a bridge between traditional hymnic practice and contemporary worship innovation. He significantly shaped Protestant hymnody through both his original compositions and his influential editorial work on major hymnal collections.
