Fanny Crosby (1820-1915) was the most prolific American hymn writer in history, composing over 8,000 hymn texts despite being blind from infancy. Working primarily in the Gospel music tradition of the 19th century, she collaborated frequently with composer William Howard Doane to create enduring hymns such as 'Blessed Assurance' and 'Jesus is Tenderly Calling.' Her prolific output and accessible, emotionally direct style made her hymns among the most widely sung in American Protestant churches. Crosby's remarkable career demonstrated that physical disability was no barrier to extraordinary creative achievement, and her works remain staples of Christian worship more than a century after her death.
