Florian Decius

Florian Decius (1494-1545) was a German Lutheran hymnodist and theologian who played a significant role in the development of early Protestant hymnody during the Reformation. Based in Halle, he composed approximately 24 hymn texts that reflected Lutheran theological principles and contributed to the emerging tradition of vernacular congregational singing. His works exemplified the Reformation's emphasis on making worship accessible to common people through German-language hymns rather than Latin liturgy. Decius's hymns were notable for their theological clarity and singable melodies, helping to establish patterns for later Lutheran hymnody.
