Fred Pratt Green

Fred Pratt Green (1903–2000) was an English Methodist minister and one of the most prolific and influential hymnwriters of the twentieth century. Ordained in the Methodist Church, he authored over 1,000 hymn texts that revitalized modern Christian hymnody with contemporary language, theological depth, and poetic craftsmanship. His hymns such as 'God Is Here' and 'When the Church of Jesus' broke from Victorian conventions, embracing modern concerns while maintaining liturgical integrity. Though Methodist by tradition, his texts achieved widespread ecumenical adoption across Protestant, Catholic, and Reformed traditions worldwide. Green's legacy fundamentally shaped the renewal of congregational singing in the late twentieth century and established new standards for hymn composition.
