Georg Neumark

Georg Neumark (1621-1681) was a German Lutheran poet and hymnodist who served as court poet in Weimar during a period of significant religious and political turmoil in Germany. He composed approximately 60 hymns that became important contributions to Lutheran hymnody, many reflecting his personal experiences of loss, displacement, and religious persecution during the Thirty Years' War. His most famous work, "If Thou But Suffer God to Guide Thee" ("Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten"), became a beloved hymn of consolation and trust in divine providence. Neumark's hymns are characterized by their theological depth, emotional authenticity, and accessibility to congregational singing. His works remain significant in Lutheran and broader Protestant traditions as examples of baroque hymnody that combine poetic excellence with spiritual sincerity.
