Georg Weissel

Georg Weissel (1590-1635) was a German Lutheran pastor and hymnodist who served in Königsberg, Prussia during the early 17th century. He composed numerous German chorales that became significant contributions to Lutheran hymnody, helping to establish the vernacular hymn tradition in Protestant worship. Weissel's works reflected the spiritual depth and theological clarity characteristic of early Lutheran church music. His hymns were widely adopted in German-speaking Protestant communities and influenced the development of the chorale tradition. Though his life was cut short by his death at age 45, his compositions secured his legacy as one of the notable hymn writers of early Lutheranism.
