George Washington Doane (1799-1859) was an American Protestant Episcopal bishop, educator, and prolific hymn writer who made significant contributions to 19th-century Anglican hymnody. Serving as Bishop of New Jersey, he founded St. Mary's Hall, an important educational institution, while simultaneously composing numerous hymns that reflected High Church Episcopal theology. His hymn texts, including works such as "Fling Out the Banner," exemplified the Oxford Movement's influence on American Protestantism and emphasized liturgical worship and sacramental theology. Doane's literary output included both original compositions and adaptations, establishing him as a major figure in American Episcopal hymn writing during the antebellum period.
