Gerhard Tersteegen (1697–1769) was a German Pietist poet, hymn writer, and Christian mystic whose devotional spirituality profoundly influenced Protestant hymnody in the 18th century. Though trained as a weaver, he abandoned his trade to pursue a life of spiritual contemplation and became an influential spiritual guide within the Pietist movement. Tersteegen composed over 100 hymns and spiritual poems characterized by their introspective piety, mystical depth, and emphasis on personal communion with God. His hymns, including works such as "Lo, God Is Here," became widely adopted in German Protestant churches and have endured in various English translations. Tersteegen's legacy lies in his articulation of Pietist spirituality through hymnic verse, bridging the gap between the formal liturgical tradition and the intimate, experiential faith characteristic of Protestant Pietism.
