Gerhardt Tersteegen (1697–1769) was a German Protestant mystic and hymn writer who became a leading figure in the Pietist movement. Though trained as a merchant, he devoted his life to spiritual devotion and authored numerous hymns emphasizing direct personal experience of Christ and intimate communion with God.
