Edward Caswall (1814–1878) was an English clergyman and accomplished hymn translator who played a pivotal role in enriching the Catholic hymn tradition through his translations of Latin and German texts into English. After converting to Roman Catholicism in 1847, he became a member of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri and devoted himself to translating sacred hymns, producing numerous works that were published in hymnals such as the Katholisches Gesangbuch. His translations are known for their poetic quality and fidelity to the originals, making complex theological and liturgical texts accessible to English-speaking Catholic congregations. Caswall's contributions significantly influenced the development of English Catholic hymnody during the nineteenth century and established him as one of the most important hymn translators of the Oxford Movement era.
