Henry Baker

Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) was an English Anglican clergyman and hymn writer who served as vicar of Monkland in Herefordshire throughout his ministry. He is best known for his extensive hymn writing and editorial work, particularly his contributions to the Oxford Movement's liturgical revival within the Church of England. Baker compiled and edited the influential hymnal "Hymns Ancient and Modern" (first edition 1861), one of the most significant Anglican hymnals of the nineteenth century, which became foundational to English church music practice. His own hymn compositions and translations from Latin and Greek hymnic sources demonstrated scholarly rigor and poetic sensibility. Baker's work significantly shaped Anglican hymnody and established enduring standards for congregational worship music in the English tradition.
