Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) was an English clergyman and hymnodist of the Church of England who composed approximately 300 hymns during his lifetime. Ordained in the Church of England, he served as vicar of Lower Brixham in Devon for 24 years, where his missionary zeal and compassionate pastoral ministry profoundly influenced his hymn writing. He is best remembered for composing "Abide with Me," one of the most beloved evening hymns in the Christian tradition, written during a time of personal spiritual crisis. Lyte's hymns are characterized by their theological depth, emotional sincerity, and accessibility to ordinary congregations, reflecting the Evangelical and Tractarian movements of 19th-century Anglicanism. His contributions significantly shaped English hymn traditions and continue to be widely sung in Protestant churches worldwide.
