Henry John Gauntlett (1805-1876) was a prominent English organist, composer, and prolific hymn writer who played a significant role in shaping Victorian church music. He served as organist at several important churches, including Christ Church, Newington, and was known for his extensive contributions to Anglican hymnody through both original compositions and arrangements. Gauntlett composed over 1,400 hymn tunes, making him one of the most productive hymn composers of the nineteenth century. His works, which appeared in numerous hymnals including "Hymns Ancient and Modern," helped establish musical standards for English Protestant worship during the Victorian era. He is remembered as a bridge between earlier English church music traditions and modern hymn composition practices.
